Driving in the UK
In the UK we drive on the left hand side of the road, and the age when we are allowed to start learning to drive is 17.
Many 17 year olds get driving lessons for their birthday present and have got their license by the age of 18 before they go off to University.
Covid has changed the landscape a bit as driving instruction was not allowed for over a year so there is a large backlog of young people and a big waiting list for taking the driving exam.
In recent years driving instructors have been graded for their efficacy by the Government and that is a good starting place to find a talented instructor. Most driving lessons take place in specially converted "learner cars" which have dual control systems and people on the road know that they are driving school cars so they are more patient than usual & give them a wide berth!
Most good driving instructors will be fully booked up for many months with their backlog of students and if they are not then I would be asking why not? Having said that, because a large chunk of their business comes from sixth form students they are often less busy during the Monday to Friday working hours than before and after school or at weekends. So if you are free during these week time & daytime hours you will have more options.
I have a wonderful friend, Jamie, who is a driving instructor in West Bridgford who taught 3 of my sons to drive and pass first time, and is just starting with my step-son too. He is very comfortable helping my relocation clients to learn to drive whether from scratch or to convert their own country driving licenses to a UK driving license and he knows all the intricate differences between the different country's systems.
If you message me, I will pass on his email to you, but do be prepared to wait a while (or be very flexible with timings) as he is very popular due to his specific skills.
