The Great Outdoors: This Summer's Most Exciting Local Sporting Events

14/7/2016

You can tell when there's cricket on at Trent Bridge, West Bridgford feels different, you see supporters wandering around, going in and out of shops and bars – sometimes it's the Barmy Army, other times it's people like me who love the Twenty20 games on a Friday evening (as much for the socialising as for the cricket!). There's this great feeling of something exciting happening, expectation, anticipation, and then (hopefully) celebration! You can almost feel our little town breathe out to welcome lots of visitors, then breathe in again when they're gone.

West Bridgford is a sporting hub for lots of sports, we've got Trent Bridge Cricket Ground, the two football stadiums – Nottingham Forest and Notts County, the National Watersports Centre is just down the road about a mile away, and we're right on the river, with its rowing, dragon boating, running and cycling, not to mention our health clubs, tennis, squash courts and bowls...

We talked about 2016 being an amazing year of sport and so far it has been, Murray's win at Wimbledon has been the highlight for me (and Euro 2016 the lowlight!). Here are some more great sporting events for you to watch/visit/get involved in. Enjoy!

The National Watersports Centre
If you're visiting West Bridgford or Nottingham you really should check out the NWSC, there's LOADS to do there... open water swimming, sailing, the SkyTrail (a bit like an assault course in the sky!), Segway hire, mini golf, bike hire, wakeboarding, standing paddleboarding, white-water rafting, power boating, oh, and of course canoeing and kayaking. The lake is 2km long and there's a 700m white-water rafting course. Excited yet?!

If you're more of a spectator than a participant, there's plenty for you too! There are lots of events this summer, including the British Rowing Junior Championships on July 16th & 17th, and Outlaw on July 24th (watch competitors complete a 2.4 mile swim, a 112 mile cycle and a 26.2 mile run). Then there's Bank Holiday fun with the Zoot Triathlon Relays on August 27th and 28th, a Canoeing Regatta on September 3rd and 4th, and the Dragon Boat Cup Finals on September 24th and 25th.

Rebecca Lovatt (the Digital Comms Officer at British Canoeing) also told me that "the Nottingham based Paracanoe team will be jetting off to compete in the Paralympics, where Paracanoe will be making its debut" at the Rio 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games. So don't forget to support them (the Olympics are from 5th to 21st August, Paralympics between the 7th and 18th).
The sound of leather on willow
I've already mentioned the cricket and if that's your thing you're in luck! There are two more Outlaws fixtures – one tomorrow (so hurry if you want tickets!!) against the Yorkshire Vikings and one against the Leicestershire Foxes on July 29th. Here's the full cricket fixtures list.

Messing about on the river
All of our apartments are in central West Bridgford, just a few 100 metres from the River Trent and Trent Bridge – which joins us with Nottingham city. One of my favourite walks is 'the bridges', from Trent Bridge down to Wilford Toll Bridge (or as it's known locally 'Halfpenny Bridge') and back along the opposite side of the river on Victoria Embankment. It's not far, about 3 miles but perfect for lunchtimes or a quick trip out after work. Or you can go to Trent Bridge and take off the opposite way heading towards Lady Bay and the Watersports Centre.

There are always walks along the river, as well as cycling (there's a 10-mile signposted cycle/walking route called The Big Track, along the river and canal) and rowing all year. We've also got some events right on our doorstep, like the now famous Nottingham Riverside Festival (on Victoria Embankment on the 5th, 6th and 7th of August), which includes the Dragon Boat Challenge on the final day. It looks brilliant fun, so what are you waiting for, get your team signed up!

If you're in West Bridgford or Nottingham for a while and need some serviced luxury accommodation (and quite frankly, who doesn't?!) while you're here, feel free to get in touch with us to ask us any questions about our apartments or to make a booking.
